Kolkata Metro issued a statement on its Facebook page after a young couple was harassed and beaten up for standing “too close” and said they were against any sort of moral policing. The couple had boarded the Metro train late Monday evening when the incident reportedly occurred.

Even though the Kolkata Metro, in its Facebook page, asserted that they were against the moral policing, it seems they don’t really stand by it. In a comment to the same post, the Kolkata Metro ranted about the “vulgarity” displayed by the younger generation and how there was a need to rectify it. The comment was soon taken off.

In its FB post, the Kolkata Metro wrote, “Dear commuters, we are trying to enquire into an incident which has allegedly taken place y’day at Dumdum Metro stn. No complaint has been lodged by anyone as yet .However we are trying to get to the bottom of it……. But we would like to make one thing very clear… that Metro Rly IS AGAINST MORAL POLICING .”

Contradicting its own stand, the page commented in the now-deleted post, “What wrong has been done by the passengers. Nothing. It is the inevitable fallout of year-long vulgarity shown by a section of young generation. In Metro train, most of the young generation people do not know decency and good manner. To speak in English does not mean civilisation. Good qualities are totally lacking in young generation people and morality a distant dream. In their attitude, arrogance and ‘don’t’ care gesture are very evident. Not only in the Metro, but also in other places similar incident will happen if the young generation does not get themselves rectified.”

The post was deleted minutes after it went up. While no explanation was given from Kolkata Metro on it, it was suspected that someone handing social media for the public utility posted personal views by mistake.

Meanwhile, some people staged a protest on Tuesday outside a Kolkata Metro station against the assault incident.

The accused men had reportedly posed embarrassing questions to the couple, which were followed by punches, kicks, and slaps.
